Getting 3D solids out of Civil 3D is a chore that has to be repeated every time the model changes.

The coordination meeting needs the road as a solid. Navisworks needs geometry it can clash against. The structural engineer wants the formation level as something they can cut through. None of that is difficult in Civil 3D, and all of it is slow, one surface and one corridor at a time, every time the design moves.

TA Solids Extractor does it for a whole selection at once, from picking the objects to writing the solids out.

 

Two sources

  • TIN surfaces. Convert one or many Civil 3D surfaces into 3D solids, setting the depth, layer, and color for the run.
  • Corridors. Extract solids straight from corridor models, several corridors in a single operation.

 

Export that cannot damage your drawing

Write the solids into the current drawing, or out to a separate DWG. The external path is the careful one: the solids are built in the current drawing, cloned out to the target file, and then the current drawing is rolled back to exactly how you left it. The target DWG is created if it does not exist yet.

You get a clean handover file and an unmodified working drawing, which is the difference between issuing a coordination model and explaining why the design file now has stray solids in it.

 

Built to run on a live project

  • Progress is shown with an entity count and a working Cancel. Cancelling is not destructive: the solids created so far are kept, and the dialog stays open so you can adjust and run again.
  • One bad surface or corridor is skipped with the reason printed to the command line, and the rest of the selection still completes.
  • Real failures, such as the target DWG being open in another window or an invalid path, are reported plainly instead of leaving a spinner running.
  • Selection lists support selecting all, deselecting all, and picking directly from the drawing.

 

Who it is for. BIM coordinators building federated models, Civil 3D designers issuing geometry to other disciplines, and anyone whose deliverable is a solid model rather than a surface. If you export to Navisworks, Revit, or IFC on a regular cycle, this is the step that keeps repeating.

Requirements: Civil 3D 2025, 2026, or 2027, 64-bit Windows. Solids are produced through Civil 3D's own extraction, so the result is ordinary AutoCAD 3D solid geometry that any downstream tool can read.

Exporting onward. The external DWG is a normal drawing file, so it links into Navisworks, attaches as an xref, or converts to IFC through your usual route with no extra step.
