Product Description:
By combining machine capabilities, material properties, and tool data with a physics-based optimization engine, SmartRoughing automatically determines the optimal cutting parameters for each machining region within defined parameter ranges, delivering reliable, efficient, and repeatable roughing results.
SmartRoughing allows beginners to program like an expert with complete peace of mind whilst also allowing more experienced users to create the same, or better, quality NC code in less time and with less effort
Key Features:
- Physics-Based Toolpath Generation:Automatically generates toolpaths using part geometry, material properties, machine capabilities, and cutting tool data, ensuring safe and optimized machining conditions.
- Adaptive Roughing Strategy:Employs high-efficiency adaptive cutting motions instead of traditional offset toolpaths to maintain consistent chip load and maximize material removal rates.
- Performance Control Slider:Select between High Performance, Balanced, and Conservative modes to scale machining aggressiveness based on machine condition, setup rigidity, and productivity goals.
- Kennametal Integration (Optional):Seamlessly import complete Kennametal tool assemblies using the Kennametal plug-in and benefit from validated, material-specific cutting data to drive physics-based optimization.
- Tool-Agnostic Compatibility:Fully compatible with tools from any manufacturer. When non-Kennametal tools are used, SmartRoughing applies physics-based optimization within user-defined cutting parameter ranges.
- Machine-Aware Toolpaths:Accounts for spindle speed, torque, power limits, tool assembly geometry, including holder and stick-out length, to tailor toolpaths through the physics engine, producing results that are directly executable on the machine with confidence.
Use Cases:
- Accelerate roughing workflows across a wide range of machining scenarios by reducing manual parameter tuning and trial-and-error programming.
- Reduce cycle times in high-mix, mid-volume production using physics-optimized toolpaths that automatically adapt to part geometry, material, and machine constraints.
- Bridge the programming skill gap by enabling less experienced users to generate expert-level roughing strategies with consistent, predictable results.
- Improve process reliability and tool life through controlled chip formation, balanced cutting forces, and machine-aware load management.
- Leverage validated Kennametal tooling data to accelerate setup, increase confidence, and achieve optimized cutting conditions with minimal user input.
- Handle geometry-specific challenges by dynamically adapting engagement, step-over, and depth strategies based on local part topography.
- Safely rough parts by tailoring an adaptive roughing strategy to varying conditions, often reducing the need for multiple roughing operations while avoiding spindle or tool overload.
Kennametal Tooling Expertise
SmartRoughing is powered by real, manufacturer-validated cutting data from Kennametal, derived from extensive tooling expertise and controlled application testing. This data feeds directly into the SmartRoughing physics engine, enabling reliable, high-performance roughing strategies without manual parameter tuning. Currently, SmartRoughing supports solid carbide milling tools from Kennametal, including flat end mills and bull-nose cutters designed for high-efficiency roughing applications. Across the supported tool portfolio, SmartRoughing provides access to several hundred Kennametal tool variants, covering a wide range of diameters, cutting lengths, and tool geometries. Each supported tool includes validated feeds, speeds, and engagement limits, allowing SmartRoughing to generate machine-safe, production-ready toolpaths with a high degree of confidence.
Kennametal tooling support will continue to expand as additional indexable tools and other technologies are validated and integrated into SmartRoughing.

Are there any known issues with this product?
SmartRoughing crashes if you try to create a Form mill (Custom Shaped Tool). So please turn off the SmartRoughing add-in in case you need to create a toolpath using form mills.
