RS FoliageTool

RS-Systems

Interactive scatter-painting tool for placing vegetation, rocks and other source objects on surfaces with brush, single-placement, scale and rotation controls.

Trial

RS FoliageTool is an interactive scatter-painting geometry object for Autodesk® 3ds Max®. It lets artists place vegetation, rocks, debris, props and other source objects directly onto selected scene surfaces using an intuitive viewport brush.

Instead of manually duplicating and positioning every object, users can define one or more source objects and one or more target surfaces, then paint, place or erase instances while controlling spacing, scale, rotation and alignment.

Key features:

  • Interactive Brush mode for painting multiple instances directly in the viewport.
  • Single mode for precise one-by-one placement.
  • Shift-click line placement for creating controlled chains of instances.
  • Erase mode and Clear command for fast cleanup.
  • Multiple source objects with random source selection.
  • Multiple target surfaces in the same FoliageTool object.
  • Replace Source workflow for updating an existing scatter without repainting it.
  • Adjustable brush radius, spacing and pressure.
  • Random scale range with independent minimum and maximum values.
  • Random X, Y and Z rotation ranges.
  • Rotation Step control for snapped angular variation.
  • Optional alignment to the target surface normal or strict world-vertical placement.
  • Dot, solid box and wireframe box viewport display modes.
  • Adjustable viewport marker and helper sizes.
  • Live instance count.
  • Native V-Ray instancing path for efficient rendering, including V-Ray Proxy source objects.
  • Standard render-mesh fallback for renderers that use the regular 3ds Max geometry interface.
  • Non-destructive editing with saved source, surface and painted-instance data.

Typical workflow:

  1. Create a Foliage Tool object from Create panel > Geometry > Foliage Tool.
  2. Add one or more Source objects.
  3. Add one or more Surface objects.
  4. Set brush radius, spacing, pressure, scale and rotation ranges.
  5. Choose Brush, Single or Erase mode.
  6. Paint or place instances directly on the target surfaces.
  7. Adjust display and alignment settings as required.

RS FoliageTool is suitable for forests, grass clumps, shrubs, stones, landscape elements, urban props, debris and other repeated objects used in architectural visualization, environment art and scene dressing.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

RS FoliageTool is delivered as a 64-bit MSI installer for 3ds Max 2021–2027. The installer automatically detects installed 3ds Max versions and allows the user to select the required versions.

On first use, the licensing window provides the following options:

  • Start the full-featured 90-day trial.
  • Buy a commercial license.
  • Import an existing RS-Systems license file.

The trial begins only after the user explicitly selects Start 90-day trial. All product features are available during the trial period.

The trial can be started and used without an internet connection. Reinstalling the plugin does not reset the trial period.

Internet access may be required for purchasing a license, checking an online entitlement or downloading a commercial license. An existing offline RS-Systems license file can be imported directly.

V-Ray is optional. When V-Ray is available, FoliageTool provides a native V-Ray instancing path, including support for V-Ray Proxy source objects. For other compatible rendering workflows, the plugin provides standard 3ds Max render geometry.

No known reproducible issues at the time of this release.

Source objects must be mesh/poly-compatible objects or supported V-Ray Proxy objects. Target surfaces must be convertible to mesh geometry.

Very dense scatters or highly detailed source geometry may increase viewport, memory and render-processing requirements. Use the simplified viewport display modes when working with large instance counts.
