QUICK INTRO VIDEO

Autodesk® AutoCAD® attribute block is great; Microsoft® Excel® worksheet autofill is also marvelous. Why don't we combine them?

This app is designed to use both of the above great features in one place: You can batch-create block references with attributes read from an Excel worksheet. Each worksheet column can be set to correspond to an attribute tag; each worksheet row of text data corresponds to a block reference attribute's values.

Data required for positioning block references in the drawing is also retrieved from the worksheet, the same mechanism as the attribute, except the data type is numeric. Block references can be positioned in one of the following ways:

  1. Along with a profile view;
  2. By X, Y coordinate values in WCS;
  3. Along a 2D polyline;
  4. Along a Civil 3D alignment (Option (4) only available in the Autodesk® Civil 3D® application).

 Typical usage scenarios are:

  • Insert the title block across layouts
  • Insert structure block refs along profile/ alignment (eg, manhole block, pier/abutment block, culvert block, traffic sign block, tree block....)
  • Insert description/comment block refs for those structures, along with profile/ alignment

Typically, the app works with the World Coordinate System (WCS) and Model space.

If the User Coordinate System (UCS) was used in the model, an implicit transformation to WCS is applied; The App also works in Paper space (Layout) or inside an active Viewport, but in such cases, it is recommended that users should double-check the results before mass production.

Notes:

  1. Users do not have to do any registration or sign in to their Autodesk account to run this Free App.
  2. Sample drawings and worksheets are placed in %programdata%\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins\NTCL_BlockFromWorksheet.Bundle\Contents\SampleDrawings
  3. Users can also get 30-day trials of the more advanced version of this app from Autodesk App Store:  Perpetual license version or  Subscription license version

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

  1. If no Excel worksheet is opened before, this app will try to open a blank worksheet. Your input must be copied to this blank worksheet. In case you want to use input values from an existing worksheet, close the app and the blank worksheet, and pre-open the existing worksheet before running this app.
  2. This app only works with desktop versions of Excel. In case multiple Excel versions are installed, this app may work with the default version.
  3. Users can terminate the app during the Excel interaction process by pressing the ESC key (key press event only works with the App dialog, not with the Excel interface).
  4. When inserting multi-block types at once, it is recommended that those blocks have the same order of the same attributes. Attribute tags are not necessarily to be the same, but attributes of the same contents should be placed in the same order in each block definition. Use the BATTMAN built-in command to arrange attribute order, and click SYNC to update existing block references.

1. In some cases, this App cannot connect to Excel® in Microsoft® 365 (Office® 365).  The NTCL Error message: "Cannot open Microsoft® Excel®" may appear right after the App is called.

This error can be fixed by running "Quick Repair" on Microsoft® 365 (Office® 365). For more information, please refer to: https://www.NTCLSoft.com/home/troubleshooting

2. Since version 2.1.3, App is installed to %AppData% \Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins folder  instead of  %ProgramData%\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins folder.  The first session of Autodesk® AutoCAD® and/or verticals after updating will have to update some registry keys due to path change, The App will NOT work in this session.  Please close and re-open Autodesk® AutoCAD® and/or verticals.  The app will work properly from the second session onwards.
