A solution which extracts information from models contained in a collection of DWG files to assess DWG file health and the performance of the model within an Autodesk® AutoCAD® based application session. Supported models within DWG files are AutoCAD, Autodesk® Civil 3D®, Autodesk® AutoCAD® Architecture, Autodesk® AutoCAD® MEP, and Autodesk® AutoCAD® Plant 3D™.

This solution is comprised of the following components:

  1. MS SQL Server database to contain extracted metrics.
  2. Administration application for configuring the MPA (SQL Server connection string, feature extraction options, and defining the collection of DWGs to extract data from).
  3. A windows application server for invoking AutoCAD application session for each DWG.
  4. An AutoCAD application plugin which extracts metrics and populates tables within the SQL Server database.
  5. Power BI template to analyze the data contained in the SQL Server database.

Changes in 2024+ Interface 

  • Until the release of the AutoCAD MPA 2024, the user had little control over the scanning of files. With the release of 2024+, the user has more options. 

Data Extraction Options 

  • As shown in Figure 31: r.2024+ Entity Extraction. below, the user is presented with data extraction options to potentially improve the speed of the application.

Running the application from the Administration app 

  • For ease of use, the user is now able to run the application from the Admin application as shown in Figure 32: Running AutoCAD MPA from the Admin Application.

Scanning fails immediately after starting

  • Path is greater than 256 characters (common)
  • AutoCAD 2024.1.6 not installed (common)
  • Incorrect version of AutoCAD MPA (requires AutoCAD MPA v. 2024.1.6) (common)
  • Incorrect version of Object Enablers (common)
  • User lacks permissions to run the script file in the AutoCAD MPA install directory (set to User Documents by default)

Unable to write to SQL Database

  • Several users scanning and writing to the database at the same time (not supported)
    • Causes undo network traffic (common)
    • Scanning never seems to end (common)
  • SQL Permissions incorrect
  • SQL not setup for mixed mode authentication (common)

Power BI errors when refreshing

  • Incorrect refresh sequence, calculations in code unable to resolve (common)
  • From the main page select Transform data>Transform data>Refresh Preview>Refresh all. 
  • When above completes, select Close & Apply>Close and Apply to return to the main page
  • From the Home tab on the ribbon, select Refresh from the Queries Panel
  • Power BI template installed on SharePoint – access attempted by too many users (uncommon)
  • Power BI can be located on a SharePoint site, but reading/writing should be done by a single user

AutoCAD Analytics Administration Application 

  • Extract Autodesk® AutoCAD® Architecture data – ACA object properties will be extracted from a drawing when this property is set to Yes.  
  • Extract AutoCAD Civil 3D data – Civil 3D object properties will be extracted from a drawing when this property is set to Yes. 
  • Extract Autodesk® AutoCAD® MEP data – MEP object properties will be extracted from a drawing when this property is set to Yes 
  • Extract AutoCAD Plant 3D data – Plant 3D object properties will be extracted from a drawing when this property is set to Yes.
