Import 3D for Autodesk® Revit® is a Revit extension that translates external 3D models into native Revit geometry and materials. It accelerates the development of 3D objects for Revit families and projects by (re)-using models created in another 3D application or models from online libraries, saving you time and money.

All-new guided import experience: a stepped wizard analyses your file before anything is created - meshes, triangles, extents and materials are shown up front - then walks you through units, up-axis, placement and Revit category (including Toposolid), a material and texture review, and finishes with a clear import summary.

Broad format support: OBJ, DAE (COLLADA - the recommended route for SketchUp models), glTF/GLB including Draco compression, STL, FBX and Rhino 3DM. Colours, transparency and textures import as native Revit materials; textures show in the Realistic visual style.

Advanced DirectShape material reassignment: Import 3D can also reassign textures and materials for already created DirectShapes - a highly valuable capability not available natively in Revit. This gives you unprecedented control over imported geometry, making it easier to update visuals, refine presentation quality, and adapt models to project standards without having to recreate them from scratch.

Runs natively on .NET 8 for Revit 2025, 2026 and 2027, with the proven legacy engine covering Revit 2015-2024. Try before you buy: the trial imports with a random scale so you can verify that your files translate correctly before purchasing a licence.

Supported formats and capabilities:

OBJ (Wavefront) - triangles and polygons, MTL materials, texture maps

DAE (COLLADA) - triangles, polygons and polylists, units and up-axis handling, node transforms, textures. Recommended path for SketchUp models (export to DAE)

glTF 2.0 / GLB - including Draco-compressed meshes, embedded textures and instancing

STL - binary and ASCII

FBX - node transforms, materials and textures

3DM (Rhino) - meshes and render materials

Colours, transparency and textures import as native Revit materials. Geometry is created as DirectShape elements in a selectable category, including Toposolid and Topography. On Revit 2025+ the add-in runs on the .NET 8 runtime; the installer verifies this prerequisite automatically.

Textures are applied with Revit's default surface projection: Revit DirectShape geometry cannot carry the model's authored UV coordinates, so precise texture placement may differ from the source application. SketchUp .skp files are not read directly - export to DAE (Collada) from SketchUp and import that instead.
