Auto Annotate

Trisita Engineering LLP

Auto Annotate for Autodesk® Revit® automatically places tags and dimensions in active views. Quickly annotate grids, walls, columns, levels, openings, MEP elements, and more in one click.

30-day free trial

Auto Annotate is a Revit productivity tool that automates the placement of tags and dimensions in your active Revit view. With a single run, you can select the annotation categories and dimension groups you need, then generate consistent annotations quickly and efficiently.

Designed to reduce repetitive manual annotation work, Auto Annotate helps BIM professionals, architects, structural engineers, MEP engineers, and Revit users speed up documentation workflows while maintaining control over annotation settings.

Key Features

One-Click Automated Annotation

Auto Annotate places tags and dimensions in the active Revit view in a single run. Select the required categories and dimension groups from the dialog, click Annotate, and let the tool create the annotations automatically.

Automatic Element Tagging

The tool can automatically place tags outside elements with leaders and align them to the view plane. Elements that have already been tagged are skipped, making it safe to run the tool repeatedly without unnecessarily creating duplicate tags.

You can select the categories you want to tag and use Select All when required. A Retag option allows existing tags for selected categories to be removed before creating fresh tags.

Automated Dimensioning

Auto Annotate supports multiple dimension groups, allowing you to create common construction and documentation dimensions automatically.

Supported dimension groups include:

  • Grids (X & Y) – Creates chained dimensions along grids on each axis.
  • Structural Columns – Dimensions off-grid columns to the nearest grid.
  • Walls (Nearest-Neighbour) – Creates dimensions between walls and their nearest neighbours.
  • Wall + Openings Chain – Creates chained wall dimensions that include door, window, and wall-opening edges.
  • Mechanical Equipment, Fixtures, Sprinklers & Air Terminals – Creates chained dimensions through family centerlines.
  • Pipes, Ducts & Cable Trays – Creates best-effort dimensions using MEP centerline endpoints.
  • Overall Size – Creates width and depth dimensions using available family reference planes.
  • Overall Length: Walls / Framing – Creates end-to-end dimensions for walls and beams.
  • Levels – Creates vertical level dimensions in section and elevation views.

View-Specific Annotation

Auto Annotate works with different Revit view types.

Plan and plan-oriented detail views support all available dimension groups.

Section, elevation, and vertical detail views support grid and level dimensioning, while unsupported geometry-reference groups are reported as skipped.

Tagging is supported in plan, section, elevation, and detail views.

Flexible Annotation Settings

The Settings tab provides control over annotation styles. Users can select the dimension style to apply to generated dimensions or use the default Revit dimension style.

For tagging, a tag family/type can be selected for each supported category from the tag types loaded in the current project.

Safe and Repeatable Workflow

All annotation operations are created inside undoable Revit transactions. A single Undo can reverse the generated stages.

Auto Annotate is also designed for repeatable workflows. Existing tags are skipped when re-running, while generated dimensions are arranged on separate lines to help prevent overlap. Different dimension groups are staggered on their own baselines.

Results and Troubleshooting

After each run, a summary dialog reports the number of tags and dimensions placed along with relevant notes. The results can identify skipped items, missing tag families, unavailable references, or dimension groups that are not applicable to the current view.

For example, if a required tag family is not loaded in the project, the results dialog identifies the affected category so you can load the appropriate family and run the annotation again.
