Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Use the Update command to apply checked changes from the source file to the selected comparison files.

Before you update

  • Open a valid source file
  • Add and scan comparison files
  • Review conflicts and select the items to update, add, or remove
  • Confirm that comparison files are writable and saved in a supported Civil 3D version

Run update

Select the Comparison Files Styles Standardization Manager tab if you are updating styles or settings.

Check the items or parent nodes you want to apply.

Click Update on the Comparison Files toolbar.

The Update button is disabled when:

  • No comparison files have been added
  • The Styles and Settings tab is not selected

If selected comparison files have not been scanned, or their check box is not fully checked or indeterminate, the tool prompts you before continuing.

What happens during update

During update, the tool:

  1. Opens each affected comparison drawing in Civil 3D
  2. Applies checked style, setting, or object changes
  3. Exports or overwrites styles and settings according to item state
  4. Removes unreferenced items marked for deletion when selected
  5. Optionally re-scans comparison files after update if that setting is enabled

Although scanning uses side database access and can run without an open document, reliable update operations require the comparison file to be opened in Civil 3D.

Style Standardization Manager window

The Style Standardization Manager window is derived from the AutoCAD Palette Set framework and provides modeless interaction within the Civil 3D session. It behaves similarly to other palette windows such as Toolspace, except that it does not support docking.

The window is divided into two main sections:

Source File

Use this section to open and inspect the master source file. It includes:

  • Source File toolbar — open, remove, expand/collapse, settings, log file, help, and about commands
  • Source File tree view — hierarchical view of Civil 3D features, styles, settings, and related content
  • Source File Properties list — property/value details for the selected tree node

Comparison Files

Use this section to manage one or many comparison drawings or templates. It includes:

  • Comparison Files toolbar — select files, scan, filter, create report, update, and remove commands
  • Comparison Files Style Standardization Manager tab — compare styles and settings against the source file
  • Comparison Files Objects tab — show Civil 3D objects affected by style changes
  • Comparison Files tree views and property lists — review conflicts, additions, deletions, and in-use items
