Pipe Network Interoperability for Autodesk® Civil 3D® & Autodesk® Revit® helps multidisciplinary teams transfer gravity and pressure pipe network information from Civil 3D into Revit. It preserves geometry and property information to reduce the need to manually recreate civil design data for building and coordination workflows.

Key capabilities include:

- Transfer gravity and pressure pipe networks from Civil 3D to Revit.

- Transfer pipes, structures, fittings, and related metadata.

- Preserve Civil 3D property information for downstream use.

- Create shared parameters to support scheduling and tagging.

- Support IFC export workflows.

- Prepare pipe network information for multidisciplinary coordination.

The plugin reduces manual rework, improves consistency of information exchanged between disciplines, and supports more efficient coordination between civil and building design teams.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Update Pipe Networks

When the Civil 3D pipe network model changes, repeat the export and import workflow to refresh the linked Revit pipe network document.

The current implementation replaces the entire linked model. It does not support partial updates to individual networks or elements.

Before you begin

  • Confirm that you have the latest Civil 3D model with updated pipe networks.
  • Save a copy of the linked Revit document (.RVT) if you need to archive the previous version for submission or coordination.
  • Remove the existing Revit link to the pipe network document from the host model before importing again.

Update workflow

1. Export from Civil 3D

  1. Open the updated Civil 3D model.
  2. Follow the steps in Export Pipe Networks from Civil 3D.
  3. Use the same working folder or a new folder as needed for your project workflow.

The export overwrites the JSON file in the Civil 3D drawing folder and refreshes extracted structure and fitting DWG files in the working folder.

Known Limitations

These are permanent structural constraints of Pipe Network Interoperability for Civil 3D and Revit. They reflect differences between the Civil 3D and Revit data models that the tool mitigates but cannot fully eliminate.

For version-specific issues expected to be fixed in a later release, see Release Notes.

Civil 3D property sets and Revit shared parameters

  • In Civil 3D, objects of the same classification can have different property sets or no property sets. In Revit, all objects in a category share the same parameter bindings.

Revit category assignment

  • All imported pipe network objects are created as Generic Models in Revit. Other Revit categories do not provide the same flexibility for representation in plan and section views.

Maintenance Operations

This page describes ongoing maintenance tasks for Pipe Network Interoperability for Civil 3D and Revit.

Update the tool

When a new version of Pipe Network Interoperability for Civil 3D and Revit is available:

  1. Close Civil 3D and Revit.
  2. Run the new MSI installer.
  3. Select the Civil 3D and Revit year features you use.
  4. Complete the installation.
  5. Launch Civil 3D and Revit and confirm the add-ins load.

The installer replaces existing add-in files for the selected product years

Add support for a new product year

If you upgrade Civil 3D or Revit to a new release:

  1. Run the Pipe Network Interoperability for Civil 3D and Revit installer.
  2. Select the feature for the new product year.
  3. Complete the installation.
  4. Authorize the external tool on first launch if prompted.
